Cabeza is the Spanish word for head.

Side note: Cabeza is also used to refer to cow-head filling for tacos and burritos. Customers can request their favorite parts such as the brains, eyes, or tongue.

Side note: Starting in the 17th century a brownish paint was commonly made of ground mummy. The paint fell out of popularity in the 19th century when artists became widely aware of it's contents.

Head Cows! - The true cause of male pattern baldness!

One theory for the reason people lose their hair is that some primate species may have used large foreheads as a sign of maturity and status. Therefore females would consider males that have lost hair, exposing larger foreheads, to be more desirable mates. I'll just keep telling myself that in 20 years.

Night of the Were-Squid!

I have taken the liberty of swapping 'wolf' with 'squid' in the following quote.

According to skepticworld.com, the term Were-Squid may come from the Norse "vargr, meaning "rogue," "outlaw" or, euphemistically, "squid". A Vargsquid was the kind of squid that slaughtered many members of a flock or herd, but ate little of the kill. This was a serious problem for herders, who had to somehow destroy the rogue squid before it destroyed the entire flock or herd."

This was just an aimless doodle, but it reminded me of Crispin Glover so I changed his haircut and gave him some rats.

Side note: Glover refused to be in Back to the Future II and III because they did not give him enough money. An actor with prosthetics was used to simulate Glover in the sequels causing Glover to sue over the use of his likeness. He won the lawsuit, but tarnished his reputation in the process. Crazy.

Octo-Smooch!

I drew this for the Kissybook. It made the cut for the print version of the book, so anyone who wants to get that can buy it whenever it's available. It's extremely girly, even for me, so I threw in a strangling for good measure.

Side note: Some octopi detach their own arms when threatened or mating, much like a lizard detaches its tail. They have also been known to board fishing ships and break into the holds to eat crabs. Octopi are badass.

Mickey

Mickey was one of the most visually iconic characters ever created, so of course they found the need to redesign him. He looked great before they made his face flesh color, put whites in his eyes, and generally took away everything graphic and distinctive about him.

This drawing is my tribute to the classic Mickey design and to my preschool self, who drew Mickey obsessively.

Side note: Mice will sometimes eat their own tails rather than starve to death. With that kind of self-cannibalizing determination, it's no wonder Mickey has refused to enter the public domain.

This is another drawing I did for Literary Debacle. This is from a Japanese folktale called The Jelly Fish and the Monkey. It was translated by Yei Theodora Ozaki in 1903, but the actual myth predates that by a good deal.

At this point in the myth, the jellyfish has bones and a shell and has just shown a disturbing degree of interest in the Monkey's liver.

I love putting glasses and bits of formalwear on my animal, robot, alien, and monster characters.

Side note: Jellyfish use the same orifice to eat and expel waste. Efficient!

Miner Madhav

Madhav is a grumpy ol’ coot. He loves nothing more than to work, as long as the work involves meticulous detail, a lot of smashing, the outdoors, and nobody else. He becomes extremely grouchy if bothered while absorbed in his tasks.

He stumbles across a great deal of precious gems and metal during his digging, but has no interest in riches whatsoever. He hangs onto the gaudy junk because he finds that people will leave him in peace if he gives them a handful of riches on the condition that they never darken his doorway again. He hates conversation, but does enjoy muttering folk tales to himself under his breath and singing old drinking songs while he works. Maybe some day he’ll meet someone who doesn’t make his bones crawl.

His goggles have flashlight lenses, allowing him to see in the dark. He uses the brute strength of his metallic left arm for swinging his giant pick axe or hammering railroad pikes into the ground. He uses his bony right hand for more detailed, delicate work, such as removing precious gems from cliff walls.

Side note: The Japanese version of the NES (called the Famicom) had a top loading slot instead of the side thing we had in the US. Those poor asian kids missed hours of blowing on cartridges fun.

Bat Men and Bat Bombs!

Side note: With an estimated 1,100 species of bats, they make up 20% of all mammal species. That's nuts!

But what's even more nuts is that during World War II, the United States considered dropping bats carrying tiny, timed bombs onto Japan. The bats would supposedly fly into buildings where they'd explode. President Roosevelt approved the plan, a species of bat was selected, the bombs were designed and so were the bat storage units that would attach to the planes. After spending about $2 million on the project it was scraped when tests failed due in large part to the bats just plain dying or being knocked unconscious by the 5,000 foot drop. Crazy!

Europa on the White Bull

Another Literary Debacle drawing.

This is Europa on the White Bull from The Dragon's Teeth, which Nathaniel Hawthorne adapted from an ancient Greek myth. I wouldn't be surprised if the movie The Last Unicorn was inspired by this tale. There's a few striking similarities between the two.

I drew this ibus-headed mummy, or as I like to call it, The Ibummy, for Literary Debacle. Literary debacle is a group of artist friends I belong to who post myths and other literature each week for everyone in the group to draw from. It's pretty rockin'.

This broken-armed cutie is from H.P. Lovecraft's story Imprisoned with the Pharaohs.
